David Mather

About the artist

David Mather is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar who studies visual art and media, including the practices of socially engaged artmaking. After receiving a PhD from UC San Diego in 2011, he completed two postdoctoral positions (at the Getty and at the MIT) and has published his academic research widely, including in academic journals and edited volumes and in his book on the transformational role of time-motion photography in early Italian Futurism (Bloomsbury, 2020). Adjacent to his academic career and related to his BFA from UC Santa Cruz in 1994, Mather has been exploring topics adjacent to his research, such as expanded visual perception, modern folk arts and crafts, and collectivist activities by artists and performers.
