Bruce Dean

About the artist

Bruce Dean received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Otis Art Institute with a major in painting and a minor in drawing. After beginning his career as an editorial, corporate and advertising illustrator and international poster artist, Bruce was an exhibiting abstract painter for over forty years. As an illustrator he received a silver medal from The Society of Illustrators and numerous awards of merit from national and international publications. His fine art posters and illustrations have been featured in scores of books and magazines. He has participated in over forty solo and group gallery and museum exhibitions. He has received numerous awards. His work includes projects funded by grants from the Department of Education and the Foundation for Global Community. In the last six years Bruce has begun to incorporate his illustration skills into his fine art paintings. His work can now be described as realistic and, in some cases, as surrealistic. He is currently exploring the liminal: the presence of absence, and silence, that which has just taken place and that which is about to take place. As always mystery is at the core. Rather than expressing what might be described as unique, he is focussing on what is shared. What are the images that we, as humans, find meaningful? What do we describe as personal? Ideally, each painting is a conversation to which we all can contribute, for which we all have stories.
